How can I use the Lynx Mixer’s monitoring features to produce headphone mixes for recording artists?

In the Lynx Outputs Mixer there are four Output Monitor Source buttons above the faders on each output channel. Please note: With Firmware Rev 25 for the AES16, or Firmware Rev 7 for the AES16e, and current Windows or OS X drivers, then 10 sources per output are available. A mouse click on one of these buttons launches a menu of record and playback sources. Selecting record sources cause input signals to be routed to the output, selecting play sources allow playback streams from a software application to be routed to the output. Combining record and play sources makes complex monitoring possible, such as headphone mixes.

Let’s use the example of two performers recording vocals over instrumental tracks with an AES16 connected to a multi-channel ADDA converter. Singer 1 is patched into Digital In 1 Left, and singer 2 into Digital In 1 Right. Each performer will need a stereo output for their own headphone mix, so singer 1 will monitor through Digital Out 1 Left & Right, and singer 2 will monitor through Digital Out 2 Left & Right.

We have pre-recorded tracks in multi-track recording software that they will be overdubbing to. These we will group into 3 logical sub-mixes, such as drums, guitars, bass, etc. In the output assignments for the tracks in each sub-mix group, select Lynx Play 1 as the output device for the first group, the second to Lynx Play 2, and the third to Play 3.

Now we will set up a monitor scheme whereby each singer can hear their own performances, as well as the three instrumental track sub-mixes. In the Lynx Outputs Mixer, we’ll start by assigning record monitor sources (inputs) for Output 1 Left & Right. The top Output Monitor Source select button for Digital Out 1 L & Digital Out 1 R is already assigned to Digital In 1 Left & Right (DI1L/ DI1R) as a factory default – we simply need to un-mute them by clicking the mute button next to each Output Monitor Source select button.

Digital In 1 Left & Right will not be assigned to Digital Out 2 Left & Right by default, so we need to manually assign them. Click the top Output Monitor Source select button over Digital Out 2 L to produce a selection menu, click “Record”, and then “Record 1 L (Digital In 1 L)”.

The Output Monitor Source select button we changed should now show DI1L. Similarly, select DI1R as the top monitor source for Digital Out 2 R. Make sure that both of these sources are un-muted.

Now to assign the play streams from our recording software to these outputs. For Digital Out 1 Left & Right, Play 1 L and Play 1 R are already assigned to these outputs by default in the second monitor source select position. Click the third monitor source select button for Digital Out 1 L, and from the selection menu choose “Play”, then “Play 2 L”.

This button should now read P2L. In the fourth monitor source select position choose “Play 3L”. For Digital Out 2 R, select “Play 2R” in the third Output Monitor Source select position, and “Play 3R” in the fourth position. Un-Mute P2L, P2R, P3L and P3R.

For Digital Out 2 L, replace P2L from the second Output Monitor Source select position with “Play 1L” (P1L), and then select “Play 2L” for the third monitor source select position, and “Play 3L” for the fourth position. Similarly, for Digital Out 2 R, choose P1R for position 2, P2R for position 3, and P3R for position 4. Un-mute all of these modified monitor source selections.

Underneath each Output Monitor Source select button, are sliders that control volume for each monitor source. These sliders can be used to control the relative volume of the three sub-mix groups and each singer’s performance. In this state, the two performers will hear there own performances as well as the pre-corded tracks, with level control over each source.
