Blue Man Group Adopts Lynx Aurora Converters for New York Studio

With permanent shows in eight cities, a national tour and a traveling museum exhibit, the Blue Man Group organization is quite busy presenting their unique musical performances. To provide the audio and video requirements for these shows, Blue Man Productions operates a 32 channel ProTools studio on New York’s lower east side. They recently acquired and relocated to LoHo studios, and as part of the studio’s recent upgrade, Studio Manager/Chief Engineer Matt Werben included two Lynx Aurora 16 converters.

“At Blue Man we do analog mixes through our custom Neve 5088 console. This means that finished pieces have gone through three stages of conversion, so the quality of the converter is critical,” explained Werben. In preparation for the studio upgrade in 2009, he wanted to perform an extensive evaluation between several high end converters to determine the best choice for the studio.

“I had heard good things about the Aurora converters and wanted to include them in the test. GC Pro in Manhattan arranged for us to check out the Aurora 16 next to a variety of other high end converters. For the first test, I simply recorded some tracks from the Blue Man Group album ‘Audio’ using a separate computer for each of the converters. We also did a multitrack recording of some drums, obviously an important instrument for Blue Man. We felt that the overall quality of sound and the cost per channel made the Aurora the best choice for us. As our recordings can have over one hundred tracks, clarity in a converter is essential, and this is what we get from Aurora.

“I would describe the audio quality of Aurora as very accurate with low end that is particularly tight. The stereo image is also very wide and clear,” according to Werben.

Werben is in charge of all audio recording production for Blue Man Group, working very closely with the BMG music director Todd Perlmutter. BMG shows have live music, but the dialogue is prerecorded at the studio. The shows are largely moved forward by this voiceover. In addition to producing new show content and commercials for the local shows, Blue Man Group Productions also provides other services, including the music for the film “Space Chimps”, commercial production, voice-over recording, music production, and film and video game soundtracks for a wide range of clients. They have also reopened LoHo for commercial use, for bookings contact matt.werden@gmail.com.

A graduate of the Berklee School of Music, Werben started as an intern with BMG in 2004. At that time they had three shows in the US and one in Germany. He has been involved with production and opening shows in Europe, Japan, US and Canada.

Blue Man Group is best known for its widely popular theatrical shows and concerts that combine music, comedy and multimedia theatrics to produce a totally unique form of entertainment. The blissful party atmosphere created at the live events has become the trademark of a Blue Man Group experience. Currently, its theatrical shows can be seen in New York, Boston, Chicago, Las Vegas, Orlando, Berlin and Tokyo. Blue Man Group’s satirical rock concert Megastar World Tour has toured arenas across the United States and has played extensively in Canada, France, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Korea. The company has applied its unique creative process to a wide variety of projects, the recording of five albums: the GRAMMY-nominated “Audio,” “The Complex,” “Live At The Venetian ® ¬- Las Vegas,” “How To Be A MegaStar Live!” and “Canta Conmigo.” Blue Man Group has also ventured into scoring (“The Jury,” “Robots” and “Space Chimps”), commercial campaigns, television programs (including “Scrubs” and “Arrested Development”) and a children’s museum exhibit, “Making Waves,” which is currently touring the United States. Additionally, Norwegian Cruise Lines partnered with Blue Man Group to headline the entertainment offerings on its newest cruise ship – the Norwegian Epic. Upcoming projects include an IMAX film and a US theatrical tour. As the company grows, it remains true to its vision of providing exciting experiences in a variety of media, which appeal to a broad range of age groups and cultural backgrounds.
