Alchemy Mastering Converts To Lynx Aurora

For Immediate Release

Alchemy Mastering Converts To Lynx Aurora

Occupying the entire 29th floor of Soho's Centre Point complex - and blessed with absolutely spectacular views of the London skyline - Alchemy Mastering have recently expanded their impressive kit list through the addition of a pair of Lynx Aurora 8 channel audio converters.

Founded in 2004 by Barry Grint and Rowan Laxton, Alchemy offers clients a full range of services including music mastering (in both traditional and on-line forms), duplication and post-production, and boasts some world class engineering talent, including ex-Sony stalwarts Ray Staff, John Davis and Chris Potter.

The Auroras have been principally acquired to meet an increasing demand in surround mastering, and form a permanent part of Ray Staff's room at Alchemy. Prior to his stint with Sony, Staff had worked as Chief Mastering Engineer at Trident Studios, and his 35 year career has seen him master classic records for David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and Supertramp, with more recent projects including the Beautiful South and Corinne Bailey Rae's number 1 debut album.

Staff explained the reasoning behind the choice of new converters:

"We've a steadily increasing number of clients bringing us projects for surround mastering - at this stage principally live shows that need mastering for DVD release. The need for a really good multi-channel converter became paramount, and we started hiring in various high-end converters to get a feel for what was going to work. Up against the more established big-name brands, the Lynx converters stood out for their absolute clarity, smoothness and ease of use - and whereas many converters really suffer in their low-end response, the Auroras have a real definition and tightness that we immediately loved."

Alchemy specified that both Auroras be fitted with Lynx's optional ADAT card, and this has further increased the flexibility of the converters by allowing Staff to take optical ADAT feeds as well as standard analogue and AES connections.

In contrast to the shift towards multichannel formats, traditional stereo vinyl mastering still forms a sizeable part of Staff's workload, so the Auroras also get to play a vital role in helping Alchemy service clients from the worlds of Classical and Jazz music:

"The Auroras are central to my vinyl set-up here because we rely on good twin D/As to feed our Neumann lathes. Our vinyl clients are principally audiophile record labels who set extremely demanding standards of quality, so for this kind of work the Lynx converters have become absolutely indispensable!"
