Hi all,

I am planning to buy an Aurora 16 Thunderbolt package soon.

I'm pretty new at all of this - so I don't really understand the benefit of the Variable Trim feature. I don't want to waste money on a feature I won't use, and I also don't want to regret not spending a bit more and not having a good feature.

Could someone explain to a novice like me what use I might get out of the VT?

Oh, and the VT is controlled via the software, right?

Thanks!

VT is for variable trim. When you pair two devices together, it is ideal to set them to a similar reference level, so one device cannot send signals too hot for the receiving device to handle. And vice versa.

So the decision would have the most to do with the devices you will be connecting to the Analog I/O on the Aurora. Many studios have all of their devices calibrated to a specific reference level. If that level is not what the standard Aurora is calibrated to (+20 dBu), then the VT would be a desirable alternative. That does not sound like the case with you.

Some other users like the VT because they have a lot of older gear or synths that put out low are non-standard reference levels. The VT can be helpful in that case too.

The Trims are set with pots on the Aurora mainboard. It is designed to for "set and forget". It is not practical if you need to change levels frequently.

Most of our users do not need VT, and the standard Aurora works perfectly for them. It works well with the overwhelming majority of pre-amps, consoles, line level devices, etc.
