Topic: Firmware update and PTHD woes Posted: March/31/2015 at 12:55am |
Hey Been running perfectly using 2x AES 16e and 2x Aurora 16 Now I'm moving to HD with a HD Native card. Starting on HD10.3.10 on OS 10.8.5
Firstly, I can get into ProTools but no matter what I do (hold down Analog Out To) to get 16 channel mode I still see the interfaces as 8 x 8 x 8 in ProTools I/O
So I checked firmware, Aurora 16 on 24, LT-HD on 7 Tried a little USB midi cable, a Motu Midi Express, and a RME Fireface. All fail, I simply cannot update firmware via midi.
So, reinstall my AES16e card to do programming.. I upgraded Aurora 16 firmware to 28, but with the AES 16e doing the programming I can't see the LT-HD card to update. When I plug back into midi, I can see the LT-HD and confirm FW version of 7, but update always fails.
I've tried AES16e drivers 54, 56, and 57 and all exhibit the same thing.
By all means if the LT-HD cards are good to go on FW v7 then that's fine, but then how do I get them to appear as 16 i/o devices?

So it seems to be launching ProTools that keeps locking my LSLOT channel setting to 16. I connected the interface via MIDI > Lynx Remote I can see it's on 16 Change it to 32, power down, remove power cord and wait 15 seconds Reconnect, launch Remote, still on 32
Open ProTools and instantly it goes back to 16.. ehh why?
I remembered I had a spare LT-HD card to I popped that in and by chance it was FW v11. Which unfortunately didn't help the 16 channel mode..

Tried deleting the ProTools preference files as per these instructions: http://www.sweetwater.com/sweetcare/articles/how-do-i-trash-my-pro-tools-preferences/
Confirmed the Aurora was in 32 channel mode, ran ProTools and again i'm back to 8x8x8

Lastly, I have two Auroras connected via a short Digilink cable In PTHD > Hardware, I see two interfaces but when I identify, either flashes lights on only the first Aurora, and never the second
So it's PTHD Native card, port 1 > Lynx1 primary, Lynx1 exp > Lynx2 primary

Hi. You cannot daisy chain Auroras if they are in 32 channel mode, since each port of the HD Native card handles 32 channels (so the second Aurora will not be seen).
Please connect the second Aurora to the second HD Native port and let us know what appears in PT.
Also, please disconnect the DigiLink cables when changing channel modes in Aurora. After changing modes, power cycle Aurora using the front power button so that the setting is stored.

Hi Michael Sorry I can't, I only have one 12' digilink cable
So, in 16 channel mode if I attach both Auroras to one of the HD Native ports, what exactly does that give me? Can I hook that up in such a way to give me 32i/o ?
And how best to upgrade the firmware on my second LT-HD?

When the units are in 16 channel mode they appear in the ProTools hardware setup as all analog inputs and outputs. In that state you can daisy them for 32 channels of analog I/O. For the LT-HD programming, you may need to flip a jumper on the LT-HD card itself to successfully program it. Here are the steps: * Unplug the Aurora * Remove the top lid. Make sure to unscrew the guide screw in the front center * On the LT-HD card there are pins labelled "Config Select" * Next to the capped pins it is silk screen "Prom 2". Remove the jumper and place it one pin over, by the side labelled "Prom 1". The middle pin will still be capped. * Plug the unit back in and verify that the LED on the LT-HD is illuminaterd when the Aurora is ON. * Try reprogramming the firmware * If successful, power down the unit and return the jumper to the "Prom 2" position * Now the new firmware is active and ready for use.
Let me know if you are still having trouble with this.

thanks Paul I'll give the firmware another shot When I go to PT Hardware config I see the Auroras as 8 analogue 8 digital.. why would that be?

Because they are in 32-channel mode. Exit ProTools, press and hold the TO ANALOG OUT button until all the front panel LEDs flash once. Power cycle the Aurora with the front panel power switch. Now the unit will be in 16-channel mode.

Hi Paul Thanks, I could never really figure out what mode they're in..
Ok, so using Remote I ensured they're both in 16 channel mode, and stay in 16 channel mode.
When using the two via one port on the HDN card, I get constant error 9171, won't run more than a few seconds. That happens with both units have the BNC cable connecting. Unit one clock is INT, unit two is EXT. Both have synchrolock lights on
When I unplug the second interface, I can have a usable situation although I still get 9171 errors, I could at least track a 4 minute song without interference (twice in the whole session- not ok but better than the alternative). That was set at 8 processors, 99%, 2048 samples, I tried several configurations and it didn't help. This is all on a fresh install of OS X 10.8.5 and HD 10.3.10
So, what would you suggest? I need 32 outs pretty much immediately and I need it to work off one port (going to 64 channels asap)

When I run a Lynx in 32 channel mode, just a thought, but can I link the AES outs of one unit to the AES ins of the other Lynx to get 32 analogue IO happening from one port that way ??

Yes, you can. That works fine, but the stream alignment between the units will not be perfect. You wouldn't want to mult across units in that conditions. You would set the second unit to SYNC SOURCE = "AES A, TO ANALOG OUT = "AES IN" and TO DIGITAL OUT = "Analog In".
However, the arrangement you've been trying really should work no problem.
When they are both connected, verify the following: * they appear in the ProTools hardware setup as HD I/O's, NOT 192 I/Os. * Also make sure that they only show Analog Ins and Outs in the hardware setup. If they AES or Digital inputs or outputs, then that is a problem.

Hi Paul The second one is being picked up as a 192 I/O It's definitely in 16 channel mode but yep, showing as a 192
This is the unit with the LT-HD firmware stuck on 7 Still can't program it.. any ideas on that?

Is the Updater failing during Verify or does it look like it completes successfully?
If the former, was the Digilink cable disconnected during the update (it needs to be)? If the latter, is the programming jumper definitely on PROM 2 or is it on PROM 1?
