Has anyone used the Lynx Aurora/AES16e for live virtual instrument performance? Looking for experiences, what worked best and how you were set up. Would like to know if it's a good or bad ideal to use. The inability to control levels remotely has me worried.

I used them all the time. Use the latest firmware and drivers for the best latency performance. You should be able to get down to imperceptible latency with a modern computer.

What do you mean by that?

What if I need to adjust my feed or monitor level? I would have to go to screen and mouse, I'd rather do that from a controller

So how are you set up for live performance, would love to get some details.
I have a Kawai ES3 for a controller, GEM Piano Module, Korg tr 76 (don't like the action looking for better), Behringer BCR 2000, MOTU midi Timepiece, Mackie CR 1604 (not for live stage use), Aurora 8 And a home built PC:

Virtual instrument hosting system

5 unit rackmount by PAR Metal
front of case to my spec
back of case from another
MSI Z97 MPOWER
Intel Core i7-4790K
Crucial Ballistix Sport 32GB (4 x 8GB) DDR3-1600
Corsair 750W 80+ Platinum Fully-Modular
Noctua NH-D15
Two Noctua NF-A14 FLX, front of case fans
Wyndows 7
Lynx AES16e PCIe card
future for a UAD card

Would like to not use a mixer, just the Aurora, if possible.

Are you mixing down to two output channels? I use a TC Electronics Level Pilot. Works like a charm and it is a passive controller.

this is not a studio setup, but in my case I could use a Rane SM26S to control the level from the Aurora and
feed, mix to in ears, have level from aurora to stage if needed and level to FOH. Still If you had implemented a way to control levels from the aurora externally (with the newer firmware and drivers) I wouldn't have the added expense and the added shlep factor. RME allows for this why not lynx?

Because it is not desirable to control levels digitally. If you attenuate too much, you affect your resolution.
