API to script recording?

   I need to record 16 channel wav files under command of a script.  The AES16e looks like a fine hardware solution.  Can anyone suggest an appropriate software solution?  I'm not that familiar with the details of the various DAW's that might support this, but maybe someone here is.  I need to send a command from a python script (or any script) to start recording, then save the recording as a multichannel wave file.  
Any ideas?
I can write C code or whatever is available.
