After spending a couple hundred dollars getting my Avalon mic pre back and forth to service (blaming it for the difference between the level of channel 1 and channel 2) I did some more extensive testing of one of my Aurora 16's.

Playing back a test tone through my nearfields with an SM57 aimed at it (yes, I could have used an Aurora output) routed to a mic pre with the mic pre output routed to the Aurora analog input snake one channel at a time I recorded the following input levels in SONAR:

1. -58.1
2. -41.8
3. -48.4
4. -30.4
5. -55.1
6. -56.3
7. -40.1
8. -53.7

Before you say it is my snake, I also performed this test on the first seven channels using a DB25 connected to a True Systems Precision 8.  While the numbers and ratios were not exact, the pattern remained the same (which channels were weak, which were strong and the general differences).

There is a 16dB difference between ch. 2 and ch. 1, and an 18dB difference between channels 3 and 4.

Time to send this back to the shop??

In the meantime I will perform this same test using one of my other unit and see how close they are.

Did the same test with a snake connected to my second Aurora 16.
1 & 2 input is indicated on the Aurora itself but not in the Lynx Mixer or in SONAR (dead)
3 through 7 all showed exactly -26.2 as the input level (nice!)
8 showed -26.3 (close enough for me).

Then I swapped the fan out cable routing it to the one with the large variances:
1. 57.4 (was 58.1)
2. 42.1 (was 41.8)
3. 47.7 (was 48.4)
4. 30.2 (was 30.4)
5. 54.5 (was 55.1)
6. 55.7 (was 56.3)
7. 39.6 (was 40.1)
8. 53.1 (was 53.7)

So it's not the fan out cable.
I also jiggled and pressed all of the digital output connectors.

Hope this helps,

Steven

Hey Mike,
Have you had a chance to look into this?

Aurora #3 fed by two True Systems Precision 8's looks like it will keep me up and running until I can get the other two fixed.
All 16 channels are within a few tenths of each other.
The only weird thing is that I have to have the Aurora's "TO ANALOG OUT" set to only AES IN.
If I set it like my other two units (with all three lights selected/illuminated) I don't get audio passed to the outputs.

Steven, All three LEDs lit is customer routing, and is relative to the settings established in the Aurora Remote software.

This does sound like you have a hardware problem with the unit. Please send an email to support@lynxstudio.com with the unit's serial number, your address and phone number. We will send an RMA ASAP.
